The Lantern festival in Chengdu dates back to 711 AD during the Tang Dynasty in China. Originally it was a one-day event and used to occur on 15th of January of the lunar calendar. Later this popular festival was extended for ten nights during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644 AD) in China. The present form of Lantern Festival in Chengdu lasts for one month at a stretch.

It is one of the most popular festivals in China. During the festival the city gets fully covered by colorful lanterns of different sizes. The shining beauty of Chengdu during the lantern festival draws around ten million tourists every year to this capital city of Sichuan province.

During the festive season, the city hosts a huge fair at the Qingyang Palace, which is a famous Taoist temple in Chengdu. Held around the 24th of the 6th lunar month, the Torch Festival is a traditional festival of the Yi and Bai peoples of southwestern China. The Yis live in compact communities in Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi. Of these communities, the Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan is the largest.

During the festival, torches are erected in front of every household, and a pile of faggots of several meters high is erected in the center of a square. When night falls, and gongs and horns are sounded, people of all ages come forward to ignite the faggot pile. Cheerful flames leap up to the sky, crackling and spluttering. Shouts of joy together with the sound of the gongs and drums make a sea of rejoicing.

Then the torch parade begins. People carry torches and walk around their houses and fields, like so many flying fiery dragons. Young people chase and sport about, filling the countryside with gladness and laughter. Other activities include scattering torches, lighting fire arches and fireworks, painting faces, and bull fighting.

Torch Festival

The Torch Festival, ‘Duzai’ in the Yi Language, is a grand traditional festival of Yi People, and it has lasted for more than one thousand years. There are many legends about the origin of the Torch Festival. The most famous one goes like this: the God of Heaven sent down a warrior to exploit farmers on the earth, but the Yi hero Zhigealu commanded the farmers to fight against this warrior. In the end, the warrior was killed, and the God got angry. He sent insects to destroy crops and damage farmers’ houses. However, Zhigealu led farmers to light torches everywhere to burn up the insects. Finally, they killed all the insects and defeated the God. That day was June 24th of the lunar calendar. To honor the victory over the insects, the local people set that day as the Torch Festival, and this festival has lasted until today.

Carnival Night of the Torch Festival

Three groups of activities take place during the Torch Festival. One includes the slaughtering of pigs and sheep, sacrificing meat and liquor to ancestors, visiting relatives and sharing good wishes.

Another group consists of interesting programs and performances. Bullfighting, sheep fighting, cock fighting, horse racing, wrestling and other such traditional sports are held.  There are also entertainment activities like singing the ‘Duolehe Song’ and a beauty contest. All present sing and dance together to enjoy the happiness of the event. This is also the occasion for young people to look for a life partner during a time of antiphonal singing.

Thirdly, there is marching with torches. When the night comes, people light torches and walk about the mountain.  It looks like all the stars are falling down to the earth. Eventually those holding the burning torches gather together to form a fire dragon and march through the countryside or on the sports ground. Young people light a bonfire and sing and dance around it. Flowers of love flowers bloom on the occasion, and one can see many young men and women in love with each other walking hand in hand in the moonlight toward the forest.

On four occasions, The Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture has successfully held an International Torch Festival. Many foreign guests, including ambassadors to China and commercial counselors, representatives of well-known foreign enterprises in China, reporters of world famous news agencies, chairmen of foreign industrial and commercial institutions, officials of international charitable institutions, and officials of enterprises from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan have enjoyed participation in one or other International Torch Festival. The Torch Festival has become an outstand Liangshan tourist venue and a distinguished international event. The Indigenous Art Council of China has adjudged Liangshan Yi People’s Torch Festival as one of China’s top ten folk customs and cultural festivals.

The Yi people's Torth Festival is one of the main ethnic traditional festivals in China. The Torch Festival starts on the twenty-fourth of the sixth lunar month. There is a legend about the origin of the Torch Festival. A long time ago, there was an invincible wrestler whose name was Eqilaba. He was so famous that the God in Heaven sent down another good wrestler to have a match with him. Unfortunately the wrestler from Heaven was killed, and the God became angry. He sent down swarms of "Heaven Insects" to destroy crops and damage farmer houses. Eqilaba and his friends went up to the mountains. They cut down bamboo trees and made fire torches with bamboo stems. They lighted the torches and used the burning torches to fight against the "Heaven Insects". Finally, the insects were killed and the crops and houses remained safe. In order to honor Eqilaba's victory over the insects, the local people repeat the torch ritual every year at the end of the sixth month. During their ritual ceremony, the Yi people hold wresting, singing and dancing activities. As time went on, the torch ritual ceremony developed into the current torch festival.
Well, early in the morning the Torch Festival starts. People begin to dress up. A man puts on a new embroidered short jacket and a pair of new loose trousers. He has a red or yellow pearl in his right ear and a blue or black turban tied around his head. A woman wears an upper garment embroidered and trimmed with lace, and a multifold skirt in variegated colors. During the daytime, some people participate in wrestling, bullfighting, archery contests, or horseracing. Many others watch the games and drink wine throughout the celebration. At night, people light up torches. They hold fire torches and go around to houses and fields to expel insects. Thousands of torches are seen moving along paths in the fields, and they finally gather together on the village outskirts. Afterwards all the participants gather around a burning fire. They dance in groups, hands in hand. Sometimes boys play bamboo flutes, moon-shaped guitars or big three-stringed instruments; girls do moon dancing. Such a happy occasion may go on until dawn. This is also the occasion for young people to look for a life partner through their antiphonal singing.
